Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s contemporary mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drafting the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to acclaimed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the duo polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would progress from its modest beginnings to a coveted place on Broadway and other much-loved stages in London and Canada, making it a international sensation.
Join us in the Underworld, where Hades runs a productive but stringent factory called Hadestown. The subterranean workers perform their unceasing duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their freedom. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice delight in a blossoming romance above ground, despite the trials of winter’s famine.
Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter sharpens above-ground longings. Eurydice, affected by unmet needs and influenced by the alluring suggestions of the Fates, lusts after the safety Hadestown promises. She eventually finds herself in the underground industrial complex and sells her birthright in exchange for stability.
Her contract entraps her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an resentful Hades, pressured by his dissatisfied workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades bind Eurydice to do his bidding for all time?
In 2019, the musical won 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its glittering achievements and sold-out audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a present era while combining classical elements from the past.
